Badges and Awards

Outdoor Adventure Skills

Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) badges help to define and measure your progression in 9 areas of outdoor skills.

We have created a convenient book for you to track your progression, here.

Chief Scout Award

In order to earn the Chief Scout Award, you must have earned or achieved the following:
  • 30 hours of volunteer time
  • 18 Outdoor Achievement Skills levels
And in your last 6 months of your last year as a scout, you must achieve the following:
  • A capstone project must be chosen and executed
  • A progression review is performed by the leadership team

Requirements for the capstone project:

The capstone project cannot be you just signing up to volunteer for someone's organization.  It must have creative input and direction from you.  This project must follow the Canadian Path Plan-Do-Review model.  The Plan stage has the following components:
  • Choose a project that matters to you and that you believe will be significant to a community.
    • Problems that you may address include (but are not limited to): education, poverty, racism, pollution, housing and ecology.
    • You can come up with an original idea for a service project, or brainstorm ideas with your Troop (including Scouters) or research suitable projects online.
  • Conduct research as necessary and create a project plan that includes
    • a schedule,
    • a budget, and
    • an inventory of requirement supplies and possible sources for your supplies.
    • an assessment of risks and how to address them.
  • Present your plan to your Troop Leadership Team for its approval. Your Scouter will need to approve the risk management components of your project.
    • The leadership team includes patrol leaders, assistant patrol leaders, troop leader and scouter.
    • Be aware that these may recommend changes so you may need to address these.
Note that the last step above requires planning to find a suitable meeting when this can be done.  As a result, we will not consider any requests for Chief Scout Award where the capstone project is not brought to our attention the earlier of spring break or 4 meetings prior to the intended start of the capstone project (if it has a start date.)

Age Requirement:

Chief Scout Award should be done in the last year of the scout's involvement in troop.  In exceptional circumstances we will consider 3rd year scouts.

Chief Scout Award is expected to be done in the scout's last year before moving on to venturers (4th year.)   In exceptional cases we may consider a 3rd year scout's request to pursue this award.

Resources:

On Feb 3, 2021, two venturers, Eli and Ethan, presented their experience obtaining the Chief Scout Award and working on both the Duke of Edinburgh award and the World Environment Award.  Their materials are located in this Google Drive location:

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The first step to achieving this award is to sign up for it, which you can do from the time you turn 14.  Our group is part of Pacific Coast Council (PCC) so we’re included in the PCC Open Group.  Note that as a member of Scouts Canada, you should NOT be charged for this, so if during the sign-up you are asked for money, close your browser and start over. You need to make sure you get into the "PCC Open Group".  Our Council Rep, Evelyn Sy, is the person who will confirm your membership.

Volunteer hours for this award need to be achieved after you sign up. You cannot use prior volunteer hours. There are other limitations. You cannot do 2 weekends of volunteer work. This award expects you to do regular, probably weekly volunteer work to get your hours.

Sunset Health Initiative (James T.):

Hello all! I appreciate your interest in this project. In case you need a quick recap of what I talked about during the Zoom meeting, I will be writing this right here.  I'm looking for scouts to volunteer to help.

What it is:

  • The main goal for this project is to help encourage seniors to have a better lifestyle by Exercise and other forms of Fitness.
  • We will be making pre-recorded videos, as well as helping lead exercises on Zoom Calls.
  • I plan on scheduling fun and engaging zoom calls with senior homes, such as George Derby Centre, where we were honoured to be the colour party (flags) for many years.
  • I also plan on creating a website, where we will be using it as a library to store videos as well as for scheduling purposes and added convenience overall.
  • We will also be on Social Media. This includes YouTube, and potentially some other platforms. This will be to store videos that are NOT on the website.

Ways you can help:

Not all work is related to the videos and zoom calls themselves. A large portion of this project is on the back end; whether that is working on the website, or doing some contacting and administration. In the questionnaire, there will be a place where you can indicate where you would like to help.

It's unlikely that you have done these things before, so be aware that your scouters will be there to make sure you get the support you need.  For many of you, this could be a great Personal Achievement Badge opportunity to learn video editing, communication skills (reaching out to seniors homes), etc...

How to Volunteer:

To volunteer to help me with it, scouts can fill in this form and send it to James or to one of the scouters:
