Mon Nov 11, 2019 Remembrance Day

Hi Scouts and parents.  Our troop again has the honour of being the colour guard at the George Derby Veterans facility.  While many scouting groups attend Remembrance Day ceremonies, rarely are they the colour guard, so we are greatly honoured to have this opportunity.

We encourage you to bring you whole family to this event, where we honour those who served us through our military.  If you cannot attend as a family, we will be taking a group in the bus on Sunday morning from Willingdon Church. We need to meet at 8:45 sharp and will leave at 9:00 with whoever is there.

We do not need a form filled out for this activity. Please wear your full uniform, looking its best. You should wear pants (not sweat pants or shorts) and your uniform must be tucked in.  We will train for this on Wed Nov 6, the week before.

They usually have something to eat after the service which ends between 11:30 and 11:45, and we will help set up tables and chairs for that meal.  Details of when we will return to Willingdon will be provided shortly.  Please let us know if you will be able to attend.

If you are traveling there on your own, the address is:

George Derby Centre
7550 Cumberland St, Burnaby, BC V3N 4Z9

Wed Oct 23 2019 - Create a Troop Code of Conduct

This coming Wed we will work on a code of conduct for our troop. Below I provide a link to some examples that other groups use:

I prefer to focus on what you *should* do and only point out what you shouldn't do where we think it will require regular focus. I don't like the 3 strikes, as they assume that all offences are the same and don't take circumstances into account.  We can work this out on Wed.

Oct 26, 2019 4SW BSA Work Day

On SATURDAY - OCTOBER 26, 2019 we will be going to Barnet Marine Park to put a tarp on our canoes and do some cleanup at the Burnaby Sailing Association (BSA) who kindly has arranged to let us store them at their facility.

Drop off at the Barnet Marine Park parking lot at 10:00 am
The work day will go until 2:00 pm when we will be picked up at the parking lot.  A BBQ lunch is provided by BSA. It is likely that the work will mostly be done by noon, so we will play games.

NOTE THE CHANGED PICKUP TIME OF 2:00 pm (previously 4:00 pm)
 .

Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.  Work gloves will be provided.

Registration forms are here:  Excel Format       PDF Format – you may send in via email or in person.

Registration deadline Oct 18th

Popcorn Sales

We have only 2 more weeks to sell popcorn. This is our only fundraiser for the year, so please do your best and sell lots of popcorn!

Regular Meetings

Remember that at a regular meeting, you should bring your uniform and a filled water bottle.  Use the washroom before you come.  If you are arriving early, we would appreciate a parent sticking around until at least 2 scouters are present as otherwise we cannot stay in the room without at least 2 of us present. These are Scouts Canada rules that we have agreed to abide by.

Investitures

This Wednesday, our new scouts will be tested for their knowledge of the Scout Promise and Scout Law.  Those who pass that and who have attended at least one activity outside of our normal weekly meetings will be eligible for investiture.

Upon investiture, you will receive your necker and woggle, and your badges for your uniform.

The Promise and Law are copied below:

The Scout Promise

On my honour,
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and the Queen,
To help other people at all times,
And to carry out the spirit of the Scout Law.
The Scout Law
A Scout is:
Helpful and trustworthy,
Kind and cheerful,
Considerate and clean,
Wise in the use of all resources.
The Scout Motto
Be Prepared
The Scout Slogan
Do a Good Turn Daily

Canadian Path Planning

Scouts Canada has returned to the roots of scouting in that there are 4 elements. Scouting is to be, as much as possible, Youth Led, we use a Plan, Do, Review approach, it is focused on Adventure, and we try to build 6 elements into the program, called the SPICES: Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional, and Spiritual.  On Wed, we will have a planning session to determine what we would like to do going forward.  The program belongs to you!

Welcome to the start of 2019

Welcome Burnaby 4SW Scouts for Fall 2019

Bike Ramble with the Cub Pack

We will meet at Burnaby Foreshore park at 9:15 am on Saturday Oct 5 and pickup is at 2:00 pm.  Bring a bike in good condition, helmet is mandatory, water bottle recommended, day pack optional.  Wear your uniform with appropriate outer wear for the weather. We go rain or shine. Deadline for registration is Sep 25 (next week Wed).

Registration Form in Excel Format                 Registration Form in PDF Format

Our first meeting will be on September 11th at Willingdon church in room 1235.  This is the Clubhouse room and is down a side corridor from the elevator in the main hallway of the basement level at Willingdon church.

Our regular meeting time is 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

All scouts are expected to bring dues of $1.00 for each meeting.  These dues are used for badges and other incidentals.

You will need to get a uniform sometime in the month of September. You can buy it at the scout shop at 664 West Broadway in Vancouver, or online at https://scoutshop.ca.

ALL SCOUTS!!!  As this is a new year, please download this physical fitness form and fill it in. I need this from all scouts, including last year's returning scouts, as I like to ensure that my information is current. I have found that the information on MyScouts is often not complete and generally not kept up-to-date.

Please also note the calendar page on this blog site.  On this you can see our first camp and some other important dates.  Details are included below and on the Forms and Registration page where a registration form will be linked.

Parents please note:  If you drop off your son before 7:00 pm, please stick around until at least 2 scouters are present. Scouts Canada has a very strict 2-deep policy, and we need to adhere to it.  At least one parent should be present with the first arriving scouter until we have at least 2 scouters in the room.  Also, on the first night, please come see me and I will have you double-check that the information I have for you is current and accurate.

Leaders Needed:  Our group is in need of assistance in a number of areas. We are always looking for people willing to help with our sections, but this year we are also looking to have someone with first aid skills to be present at our meetings while we get a few more scouters certified, especially in Pack.  If you have skills in organizing or accounting, we could use you to help with our big fundraiser and some of our special activities, like popcorn, missions night and other activities.  We could also use someone to help us as a group registrar.  If you are interested please let us know.

All the training that you need will be provided by Scouts Canada. 4th Burnaby SW will cover the cost of the police record check, uniform and any additional activities. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please let me know.

Popcorn Fundraiser: This year, our Popcorn kickoff is on September 25th at Willingdon Church in the Connection (the gym).

All parents are invited to the Popcorn Fundraiser night. We strongly encourage all parents to attend with their Beaver, Cub or Scout. This will better equip your youth to sell popcorn. It starts at 7:00pm in the Connection (Gym) located on the main level of the church.

Our Popcorn Fundraiser happens once a year. It is the only fundraiser that we do. The boys in the program sell Scouts Popcorn to help raise money to support the Scouting Program at our church. Since we started the Popcorn Fundraiser Program, we have sold over $250,000 and over $120,000 have gone directly back into the program.

The Popcorn Fundraiser helps pay for all the activities that your boys do during the year like the crafts, camps, hikes, activities and supplies, reducing the amount you need to pay. For example, last year, the funds they raised selling popcorn helped to cover some of the costs for 11 of our scouts who attended the Pacific Jamboree in Sooke, BC.

First camp:  Our first camp is planned for Fri Sep 27-Sun Sep 29.

Fall Camp 2019 - Camp Whonnock

We will meet at the church at 5:00 pm on Fri Sep 27 and will return to the Church on Sun at 3:00 pm.  Have supper before or be prepared to eat it on the bus (no messes, please).  We may be joined by scouts from the 1st Nazarene Troop in Vancouver.

The focus of this camp is to train our new scouts for their stove, lantern, axe and knife permits, and to remind our returning scouts of the safe way of using these tools.

Registration is due by Wed Sep 18, and the cost is $45.00. The camp will be in unheated cabins, so make sure you have a good warm sleeping bag in case the temperature drops. Whonnock is in the mountains and can be different temperatures from in town.

The registration form is available as Microsoft Excel or as a PDF.

Go Karting - Wed June 12

Meet at 6:45 at Richmond Go-Karts. The location is at 6631 Sidaway Rd, Richmond BC 1/2 block south of Richmond Auto Mall.  Google Maps Link

Bring $22.00 for two rides. You will pay Richmond Go-Karts directly, so don't bring a cheque for the troop. I suspect they'll take cash, credit, debit and maybe Apple Pay.  Parents welcome to stay and watch, as it closes at 8:00 pm, so pickup is at 8:00 pm.

This will be the Widgeon Creek sign-up deadline! We have lots of room yet.

I need to hand out 4 more Chilliwack Lake work camp badges to scouts, and forgot to give them to my 2 leaders who attended. I will do so at this occasion.

Burnaby Area Iron Chef - Friday June 14

We now have 2 patrols, so we will send a separate email to those scouts with details and grouping.

Camp Gear Check - Wed June 19

We discovered at Lindeman lake that some of our tents have the wrong poles. We will be bringing all our Tarn 3 (3-man) tents to PJ, and will likely need them in the fall, so we need to check them and make sure they are all good. We will also have to replace the Tarn 2's two incorrect poles with good Tarn 2 poles.

On Wed June 19, we will meet in the underground parking near the scout storage cage in the north west corner at 7:00 pm, where we will divide you up into teams to do various chores.

  • Some will set up tents (probably in the parkade) and make sure we have all the right poles.
  • Some will go to the HQ lockup room with some dish soap and scrubbers and clean some of our gear that was not well cleaned at the last camp.
  • And some will be loading up patrol boxes with gear for Widgeon Creek Canoe Camp. We should be finished by 8:00 pm.
Meet at 7:00 pm, leave at 8:00 pm. The underground parking near our cage will be the drop off and pick up location.

PJ Meeting on Wed June 26 and Info

We will likely have a meeting on Wed June 26 for PJ attendees. More detailed info will be coming shortly.

We are hoping to get information about what adventures we will be having this week. As soon as we have that we will be providing more information.

Iron Chef Competition

In order to compete in the Iron Chef competition, we need to know by Wed June 5 (our wind-up at Warner Loat Park) who is interested, and will arrange patrols at that time.

Please note that you will need 3 small portions (for the judges). Details of the competition, run by Burnaby Area scouting is located here (I received it on Thursday):

Iron Chef Competition Rules, Schedule and Information

Please note that we only created menus for one meal per patrol. The menus you created are scanned into a single file here:

Menus we made last Wed

Patrols are responsible for planning and buying food for the competition. Remember to keep the meals small.

If I don't have at least 3 interested, we will not proceed.

Registrations, Backpacking Preparation and More

Lindeman Lake Start Time Change!!!

We are changing the start time at Willingdon from 8:00 to 7:00 am on Saturday May 25th in order to ensure we get parking for the bus at Lindeman Lake parking lot.

Deer Lake Canoeing

Note that the next two weeks we will be meeting at the east end of Deer Lake, where the playground and the canoe and paddle-boat rentals are.  If you can meet closer to 6:30, we will have more time to get the canoes down and ready to go for a prompt 7:00 pm start.

For the May 22 linking day with cubs, we will start as quickly after 6:45 as possible (as that's the normal start time for Cubs).

Feel free to bring your own PFD if you have one (it may fit you a bit better than ours)

Registration Renewal

Please be aware that Registration Renewal has started as of May 1st. Returning scouts and cubs moving up to scouts from our cub pack can register exclusively for 2 weeks. On May 15, the registration opens up to anyone who wants in.

If all our current scouts renew, and all 3 of our howlers come up from cubs, the troop will be full.  Please note that we already have a waiting list. If you do not register in the next two weeks you will likely not get in!  We don't want to lose any of you!

Backpacking Preparation Wed May 8

In preparation for our upcoming May camp on May 25-26, which is a backpacking camp, next week on Wednesday May 8th, we are requesting that you bring your backpack, sleeping bag, foamy, clothes and coats packed as though you were going backpacking. Use the camp gear list on the "Forms and Registration" page of the blog as a guide.  Everything must fit securely in or on your backpack.  This is absolutely mandatory for this camp.

Remember that your pack will need room for patrol gear (tents, stoves, fuel, food, etc...)  I would also ask that you bring your water bottle full and two spare water bottles.

Note that your sleeping bag must fold up small enough to be carried on a pack, yet be warm enough for mountain conditions.

We will use this as an opportunity to see if you have adequate gear.
If you don't have a good backpacking pack, let me know - we have a limited number of packs and frames available. If you have spares let me know and please bring them.

Backpacking Menu Competition Wed May 8

Whether you are backpacking with us in May or not, we are requesting that everyone think through and bring on next Wednesday, May 8th, the following:

For Breakfast, Lunch, Supper and a Mugup, think up the lightest but most nutritional meal.  Rice is extremely light, you just add water, but it does not provide good protein or vitamins.  We'll be scoring your submissions and will have a prize for the winner.

Church Parade Wed May 5

This is a reminder of our church parade this Sunday May 5th.  Please attend as many of these times as you can: 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 - meet in the church lobby in full uniform.

Scout Trucks

Automotive Engineers Wanted!

Have you ever wanted to design and build your own 18-wheeler long-haul truck? Well now is your chance!  Burnaby 4SW Scout Troop and Burnaby Area Scouting are hosting a number of truck races and design competitions.

See the Scout Trucks Page for more details including UPDATED START TIME FOR BURNABY RALLY and new date for our rally

The trucks will cost $17.90 each.  If you are interested in building and racing a car, I must have your payment by Wednesday February 6th so I can place an order in time for our races.

We will be racing our trucks on these dates:

Our meeting on the date of the March 6th rally will be at the usual start and end times. We will meet in the connection, you will be picked up at the connection.
