Mon Nov 11, 2019 Remembrance Day

Hi Scouts and parents.  Our troop again has the honour of being the colour guard at the George Derby Veterans facility.  While many scouting groups attend Remembrance Day ceremonies, rarely are they the colour guard, so we are greatly honoured to have this opportunity.

We encourage you to bring you whole family to this event, where we honour those who served us through our military.  If you cannot attend as a family, we will be taking a group in the bus on Sunday morning from Willingdon Church. We need to meet at 8:45 sharp and will leave at 9:00 with whoever is there.

We do not need a form filled out for this activity. Please wear your full uniform, looking its best. You should wear pants (not sweat pants or shorts) and your uniform must be tucked in.  We will train for this on Wed Nov 6, the week before.

They usually have something to eat after the service which ends between 11:30 and 11:45, and we will help set up tables and chairs for that meal.  Details of when we will return to Willingdon will be provided shortly.  Please let us know if you will be able to attend.

If you are traveling there on your own, the address is:

George Derby Centre
7550 Cumberland St, Burnaby, BC V3N 4Z9

Wed Oct 23 2019 - Create a Troop Code of Conduct

This coming Wed we will work on a code of conduct for our troop. Below I provide a link to some examples that other groups use:

I prefer to focus on what you *should* do and only point out what you shouldn't do where we think it will require regular focus. I don't like the 3 strikes, as they assume that all offences are the same and don't take circumstances into account.  We can work this out on Wed.

Oct 26, 2019 4SW BSA Work Day

On SATURDAY - OCTOBER 26, 2019 we will be going to Barnet Marine Park to put a tarp on our canoes and do some cleanup at the Burnaby Sailing Association (BSA) who kindly has arranged to let us store them at their facility.

Drop off at the Barnet Marine Park parking lot at 10:00 am
The work day will go until 2:00 pm when we will be picked up at the parking lot.  A BBQ lunch is provided by BSA. It is likely that the work will mostly be done by noon, so we will play games.

NOTE THE CHANGED PICKUP TIME OF 2:00 pm (previously 4:00 pm)
 .

Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.  Work gloves will be provided.

Registration forms are here:  Excel Format       PDF Format – you may send in via email or in person.

Registration deadline Oct 18th

Popcorn Sales

We have only 2 more weeks to sell popcorn. This is our only fundraiser for the year, so please do your best and sell lots of popcorn!

Regular Meetings

Remember that at a regular meeting, you should bring your uniform and a filled water bottle.  Use the washroom before you come.  If you are arriving early, we would appreciate a parent sticking around until at least 2 scouters are present as otherwise we cannot stay in the room without at least 2 of us present. These are Scouts Canada rules that we have agreed to abide by.

Investitures

This Wednesday, our new scouts will be tested for their knowledge of the Scout Promise and Scout Law.  Those who pass that and who have attended at least one activity outside of our normal weekly meetings will be eligible for investiture.

Upon investiture, you will receive your necker and woggle, and your badges for your uniform.

The Promise and Law are copied below:

The Scout Promise

On my honour,
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and the Queen,
To help other people at all times,
And to carry out the spirit of the Scout Law.
The Scout Law
A Scout is:
Helpful and trustworthy,
Kind and cheerful,
Considerate and clean,
Wise in the use of all resources.
The Scout Motto
Be Prepared
The Scout Slogan
Do a Good Turn Daily

Canadian Path Planning

Scouts Canada has returned to the roots of scouting in that there are 4 elements. Scouting is to be, as much as possible, Youth Led, we use a Plan, Do, Review approach, it is focused on Adventure, and we try to build 6 elements into the program, called the SPICES: Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional, and Spiritual.  On Wed, we will have a planning session to determine what we would like to do going forward.  The program belongs to you!
